There was a farmer in Africa who was hy and content. He was hy because he was content. He was content because he was hy.

One day a wise man came to him and told him about the glory of diamonds and the power that goes along them.

The wise man says, ?If you had a diamond the size of your thumb, you could he your own city. If you had a diamond the size of your fist you could probably own your own country.? And then he went away.

That night the farmer couldn't sleep. He was unhy and he was discontent. He was unhy because he was discontent, and he was discontent because he was unhy.

The next morning he made arrangements to sell off his farm, took care of his family and went in search of diamonds. He looked all over Africa and couldn't find any. He looked all through Europe and couldn?t find any. When he got to Spain, he was emotionally, physically and financially broke. He got so disheartened that he threw himself into the Barcelona River and committed .

Back home, the person who had bought his farm was watering the camels at a stream that ran through the farm. Across the stream, the rays of the morning sun hit a stone and made it sparkle like a rainbow.

He thought it would look good on the mantelpiece. He picked up the stone and put it in the living room. That afternoon the wise man came and saw the stone sparkling. He asked, "Is Hafiz back?"

The new owner said, "No, why do you ask?" The wise man said, "Because that is a diamond. I recognize one when I see one." The man said, "No, that's just a stone I picked up from the stream. Come, I'll show you. There are many more.' They went and picked some samples and sent them for analysis. Sure enough, the stones were diamonds. They found that the farm was indeed covered with acres and acres of diamonds.

We read that Alexander, the great, was the follower of Aristotle, from whose instructions he got the greatest advantage. What was the most, he asked his master what would profit himself, and at the same time be serviceable to others.

Aristotle answered, ?My son, hear with attention; and if you accept my advice, you duanwenw will arrive at the greatest honors. There are seven distinct points to be remembered. First , you do not overcharge the balance. Secondly, you do not feed a fire with the sword, Thirdly, stress not the crown; nor, fourthly, eat the heart of a little bird. Fifthly, when you he taken the right road, never turn from it. Sixthly, walk not in the high road; and, seventhly, do not allow a talkative duanwenw swallow to possess your ees.?

The king carefully considered the meaning of these puzzling directions; and observing them, experienced their utility in his following years.

Because of heat, a deer came to a spring to drink. Seeing his own shadow reflecting in the water, he greatly admired the size and variety of his horns, but felt angry with himself for hing such slender and weak feet.

While he was in deep thought, a lion eared at the pool duanwenw and sprang upon him. The deer immediately began to run away as fast as possible. As long as the road was smooth and open, he kept himself at ease at a safe distance from the lion. But entering a wood he became entangled by his horns, and the lion quickly came up to him and caught him. When too late he thus regretted, ?My god! How he I cheated myself! These feet sed me, but I had despised them, and I duanwenwcom was proud of these antlers which he brought me destruction.?

We often look down upon what is most truly valuable in our life.

Wes of the life 生命的波纹

Sioux Indian story ...

My grandfather took me to the fish pond on the farm when I was about seven, and he told me to throw a stone into the water. He told me to watch the circles created by the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone.

"You may create lots of splashes in your life, but the wes that come from those splashes will disturb the peace of all your fellow creatures," he said.

"Remember that you are responsible for what you put in your circle and that circle will also touch many other circles."

"You will need to live in a way that allows the good that comes from your circle to send the peace of that goodness to others. The splash that comes from anger or jealousy will send those feelings to other circles. You are responsible for both."

That was the first time I realized that each person creates the inner peace or discord that flows out into the world. We cannot create world peace if we are riddled with inner conflict, hatred, dou, or anger.

We radiate the feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak them or not. Whatever is splashing around inside of us is spilling out into the world, creating beauty or discord with all other circles of life.

Wind of forgiveness

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend sled the other one in the face.

The one who got sled felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend sled me in the face."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been sled got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend sed him.

After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend sed my life."

The friend who had sled and sed his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engre it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

Lake Of Autumn

I remember quite clearly now when the story hened. The autumn lees were floating in measure down to the ground, recovering the lake, where we used to swim like children, under the sun was there to shine. That time we used to be hy. Well, I thought we were. But the truth was that you had been longing to lee me, not daring to tell me. On that precious night, watching the lake, vaguely conscious, you said: “Our story is ending.”

The rain was killing the last days of summer. You had been killing my last breath of love, since a long time ago. I still don’t think I’m gonna make it through another love story. You took it all away from me. And there I stand, I knew I was going to be the one left behind. But still I’m watching the lake, vaguely conscious, and I know my life is ending.

Love is a two-way street

A father sat at his desk poring over his monthly bills when his young son rushed in and announced,

“Dad, because this is your birthday and you’re 55 years old, I’m going to give you 55 kisses, one for each year!” When the boy started making good on his word, the father exclaimed, “Oh, Andrew, don’t do it now; I’m too busy!”

The youngster immediately fell silent as tears welled up in his big blue eyes. Apologically the father said, “You can finish later.”

The boy said nothing but quietly walked away, disointment written over his face. That evening the father said, “Come and finish the kisses now, Andrew!” But the boy didn’t respond.

Unfortunately, a few days later after this incident, the boy had an accident and was drowned. His heartbroken father wrote...

“If only I could tell him how much I regret my thoughtless words, and could be assured that he knows how much my heart is aching.”

…Love is a two-way street. Any loving act must be warmly accepted or it will be taken as rejection and can lee a scar. If we are too busy to give and receive love, we are too busy! Nothing is more important than responding with love to the cry for love from those who are near and precious to us. Because... there may be no chance at all as in the case of the little boy...

The Real Meaning of Peace

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest — in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?

“Because,” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”

it rains and the wind is never weary;

my though still cling to the moldering past,

but the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

and the days are dark and dreary.

be still,sad heart!and cease repining;

behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

thy fate is the common fate of all,

into each life some rain must fall,

some days must be dark and dreary.

天冷、阴暗、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

我的生活寒冷、阴郁、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

安静吧,忧伤的心!别再悔恨;

乌云后面太阳依然辉煌灿烂;

Today, cellphone has been part of people?s live, they use cellphone to keep in touch with friends and family, cellphone is also very helpful in people?s work. As cellphone is so important, so people count on it so much, I think we need to take the right attitude towards cellphone.

Teenagers especially like to use cellphone, they can?t live without cellphone. Take my brother for example. He carries cellphone all the time, no matter what he does. When we are talking to him, he just lows down his head and says yes, I don?t think he is listening to us. When he is walking on the street, he still keeps his eyes on the screen. My brother is a typical cellphone user, I feel pity for him because he misses so many beautiful moment.

It is very a common situation for the young people to low down their heads to check on the cellphone. They don?t he the real communicate with others, it is not a good behior. It is better to drop down the cellphone and see the scenery around us.

Wit can gain a breakfast

Pat O'Burke was a poor Irishman with a large family and one morning, waking up early from cold and hunger, he decided to go shooting in a wood near his cottage.

The wood belonged to Lord Northwood, a rich gentle man, and Pat had no right to go there, but there were swarms of rabbits and flocks of birds that were good to eat, and Pat decided to take the risk.

Suddenly he saw the owner, with a group of friends, coming towards him in the wood. There was a look of anger on lord Northwood's face as he saw the gun in Pat's hands. Pat's heart sank with fear, but he saw there was no hope of escape, so he walked boldly up to the company and said to Lord Northwood.

"Good morning, sir, and what has brought you out so early this morning?" Lord Northwood, rather surprised, said he and his friends were taking a little exercise to get an etite for their breakfast. Then looking at Pat with suspicion, he said, "But why are you out so early in the morning?"

"Well, sir" said Pat, "I just came out to see if I could get a breakfast for my etite." The whole crowd burst into laughter at Pat's ready wit, and with a smile Lord Northwood walked on leing Pat to try his luck with the rabbits.

Sing is a technique . It?s simple. It?s just not easy.

 What will matter?

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no days, no hours or minutes. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.

Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.

Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disear.

So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will all expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.

It won't matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived.

It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Your gender, skin color, ethnicity will be irrelevant.

So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?

Warren Buffet once said: "If you don?t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die."

Sounds ridiculous in the first place, right? Isn?t that obvious?

And how on earth can it be possible to make money while you sleep?

If you want to he an income, you he to work, right?

But no, what he said is not wrong.

That way which he described as to make money while you sleep is called investing.

Normal middle-class use their skills and time to make money. But the rich use their money to make money. They invest the money that they own now to make ROI, which means return on investment.

It?s not a hard thing to do, because there are a lot of ways to manage your personal finance.

In the past, I usually spent as much as I could earn in a month.

But when I saw this quote of Buffett, I suddenly realized: Isn?t that making all my efforts in vain? Because I he nothing left. I didn?t make anything for my future.

That?s why I started to face the truth of how I was living. And I made some bold changes and began to se money.

I wish that there is a day when I no longer need to work and can use money to make money.

Acres of Diamonds

There was a farmer in Africa who was hy and content. He was hy because he was content. He was content because he was hy.

One day a wise man came to him and told him about the glory of diamonds and the power that goes along them.

The wise man says, “If you had a diamond the size of your thumb, you could he your own city. If you had a diamond the size of your fist you could probably own your own country.” And then he went away.

He looked all through Europe and couldn’t find any.

Learning — A Lifelong Career

As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind. Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inex-haustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, *** ysis, and judgment. Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and reliable warrant of success in times of uncertainty.

Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a mon fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a neyer-ending process, from the cradle to the gre. With the world changing so fast, to cease learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What's worse, the animal instinct dormant deep in our sub-conscious will e to life. Weakening our will to pursue our noble ideas, undermining our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization. Therefore, to stay mentally young, we he to take learning as a lifelong career.

Suit Is Best

The proper force of words lies not in the words themselves, but in their lication.

A word may be a fine sounding word, of an unusual length, and very imposing from its learning and novelty, and yet in the connection in which it is introduced may be quite pointless and irrelevant.

It is not pomp or pretension, but the adaptation of the expression to the idea, that clenches a writer's meaning:

这是因为要确切表达作者的意思,关键并不在文辞的华丽和堂皇,而在于其是否切合内容;

as it is not the size or glossiness of the materials, but their being fitted each to its place, that gives strength to the arch;

就像在修建拱门时要使其坚固,关键不在于材料的大小和光泽,而在于它们用在那里是否恰好严丝合缝;

or as the pegs and nails are as necessary to the support of the building as the larger timbers, and more so than the mere showy, unsubstantial ornaments.

I hate anything that occupies more space than it is worth.

I hate to see a load of bandboxes go along the street, and I hate to see a parcel of big words without anything in them.

A person who dews not deliberately dimples of all his thoughts alike in cumbrous draperies and flimsy disguises may strike out twenty varieties of familiar everyday language, each ing somewhat nearer to the feeling he wants to convey, and at last not hit upon that particular and only one which may be said to be identical with the exact impression in his mind.

This would seem to show that Mr. Cobalt is hardly right in saying that the first word that occurs is always the best.

It may be a very good one; and yet a better may present itself on reflection or from time to time.

It may be suggested naturally, however, and spontaneously, from a fresh and lively conception of the subject.

A professor stood before his class of 20 senior organic biology students, about to hand out the final exam.

"I want to say that it's been a pleasure teaching you this semester. I know you've all worked extremely hard and many of you are off to medical school after summer. So that no one gets their GPA messed up because they might he been celebrating a bit too much this week, anyone who would like to opt out of the final exam today will receive a 'B' for the course."

There was much rejoicing amongst the class as students got up, passed by the professor to thank him and sign out on his offer. As the last taker left the room, the professor looked out over the handful of remaining students and asked, "Any one else? This is your last chance." One final student rose up and took the offer.

The professor closed the door and took attendance of those students remaining. "I'm glad to see you believe in yourself." he said. "You all he 'A' s."

The Athenian and the Theban

An Athenian and a Theban were on the road together, and passed the time in conversation, as is the way of trelers. After discussing a variety of subjects they began to talk about heroes, a topic that tends to be more fertile than edifying. Each of them was lish in his praises of the heroes of his own city, until eventually the Theban asserted that Hercules was the greatest hero who had ever lived on earth, and now occupied a foremost place among the gods; while the Athenian insisted that Theseus was far superior, for his fortune had been in every way supremely blessed, whereas Hercules had at one time been forced to act as a servant. And he gained his point, for he was a very glib fellow, like all Athenians; so that the Theban, who was no match for him in talking; cried at last in some disgust, "All right, he your way; I only hope that, when our heroes are angry with us, Athens may suffer from the anger of Hercules, and Thebes only from that of Theseus."

The Tale of the Sun

A long, long time ago, the earth was in plete darkness. There was no sun, only the moon and some stars. This was before people, when giant animals roamed the earth. They were much bigger than animals today. Dinewan the Emu and Bralagah the Brolga were two such animals.

One day, they were arguing and fighting over some silly little thing. Bralagah got angry and grabbed one of Dinewan's large eggs and hurled it into the sky. It landed on a pile of firewood where the yellow yolk burst into flames. The flames were so bright, that the world was lit up.

One of the good spirits who lived in the sky was watching this and saw how bright and beautiful the world looked. Maybe if a fire was lit everyday, there would always be light.

So the good spirit collected wood every night. When the pile was big enough, his friend, the morning star, would e out to let everyone know that the fire was about to start. But what about anyone sleeping? How would they know that the fire was lit? The good spirit thought about this. Then, somewhere in the distance, came a loud laugh.

Gugurrgaagaa, gugurrgaagaa

The sound of the cackling kookaburra rang out across the earth.

'That's it, that's the noise I want,' The good spirit was jumping up and down with excitement. At last he had found a way to wake the world.

So now, every morning, just as the dawn is breaking, the laugh of Gugurrgaagaa the Kookaburra can be heard all across Australia, bringing in the new day.

Girls of summer

We lived on the banks of the Tennessee River, and we owned the summers when we were girls. We ran wild through humid潮溼的,溼润的 summer days that never ended but only melted one into the other. We floated down rivers of weekdays with no school, no rules , no parents, and no constructs构图,建筑物 other than our fantasies. We were good girls, my sister and I. We had nothing to rebel against. This was just life as we knew it, and we knew the summers to be long and to be ours.

The road that ran past our house was a one-lane rural route. Every morning, after our parents had gone to work, I'd wait for the mail lady to pull up to追上 our box. Some days I would put enough change for a few stamps into a mason jar玻璃瓶 lid and lee it in the mailbox. I hated bothering mail lady with this transaction交易,办理 , which made her job take longer. But I liked that she knew that someone in our house sent letters into the outside world.

I liked walking to the mailbox in my bare feet and leing footprints on thedewy带露水的 grass. I imagined that feeling the wetness on the bottom of my feet made me a poet. I had never read poetry, outside of some Emily Dickinson. But I imagined that people who knew of such things would walk to their mailboxes through the morning dew晨露 in their bare feet.

We planned our weddings with the help of Barbie dolls and the tiny purple wild flowers growing in our side yard. We became scientists and tested concoctions调和,混合 of milk, orange juice, and mouthwash漱口水 . We ate handfuls ofbittersweet苦乐参半的 chocolate chips and licked peanut butter花生酱 off spoons. When we ran out of sweets to eat, we snitched sugary Flintstones vitamins out of the medicine cabinet. We became masters of the Kraft macaroni通心面条 and cheese lunch, and we dutifully called our mother at work three times a day to give her updates on our adventures. But don't call too often or speak too loudly or whine too much, we told ourselves, or else they'll get annoyed and she'll get fired and the summers will end.

We shaped our days the way we chose, far from the prying爱打听的,窥探的eyes of *** s. We found our dad's Playboys and charged the neighborhood boys money to look at them. We made crank易怒的 calls around the county, telling people they had won a new car. "What kind?" they'd ask. "Red," we'd always say. We put on our mom's old prom舞会 dresses, plete with gloves and hats, and sang backup to the C.W. McCall song convoy, " which we'd found on our dad's turntable.

We went on hikes into the woods behind our house, crawling under barbed wire fences and through tangled undergrowth. Heat and humidity溼度,溼气 found their way throught he lees to our flushed faces. We waded in streams that we were always surprised to e across. We walked past cars and auto parts that had beenabandoned抛弃 in the woods, far from any road. We'd reach the tree line and e out unexpectedly into a cow pasture牧场,牧草 . We'd perch on the gate or stretch out on the large flat limes边界,界限 tone outcrop that marked the end of the Woods Behind Our House.

One day a thunderstorm blew up along the Tennessee River. It was one of those storms that make the day go dark and the humidity disear. First it was still and quiet. There was electricity in the air and then the sharp crispness易碎,酥脆 of a summer day being blown wide open as the winds rushed in. We threw open all the doors and windows. We found the classical radio station from two towns away and turned up the bass and cranked up把声音调大,启动 the speakers. We let the wind blow in and churn搅动,搅拌 our summer day around. We let the music we were only vaguely暧昧地,含糊地 familiar with roar吼叫,咆哮 through the house. And we twirled转动,旋转 . We twirled in the living room in the wind and in the music. We twirled and we imagined that we were poets and dancers and scientists and spring brides.

We twirled and imagined that if we could let everything --- the thunder, the storm, the wind , the world --- into that house in the banks of the Tennessee River, we could live in our summer dreams forever. When we were girls.

Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling玩杂耍 some five balls in the air. You name them: Work, Family, Health, Friends, Spirit. And you re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back反弹 . But the other four balls-family, health, friends and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably不能取消地 scuffed磨损 , marked, nicked割进,刻痕 , damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.

How?

Don't undermine破坏,危害 your worth by paring yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special. Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you. Don't take for granted认为……理所当然 the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would cling to your life, for without them, life is meaningless.

Don't let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live ALL the days of your life. Don't give up when you still he something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us each together. Don't be afraid to encounter遭遇 risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be bre. Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; and the best way to keep love is to give it wings. Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you are going.

Refusing to accept failure

"Mount Everest, you beat me the first time, but Ill beat you the next time"

Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb Mount Everest珠穆朗玛峰 . On May 29, 1953 he scaled the highest mountain then known to man-29,000 feetstraight up直率地,真实地 . He was knighted授予爵位 for his efforts.

He even made American Express card美国运通卡 mercials because of it! However, until we read his book, High Adventure, we don't understand that Hillary had to grow into this success.

You see, in 1952 he attempted to climb Mount Everest, but failed. A few weeks later a group in England asked him to address its members.

Hillary walked on stage to a thunderous像打雷的 lause. The audience was recognizing an attempt at greatness, but Edmund Hillary saw himself as a failure. He moved away from the microphone and walked to the edge of the platform.

He made a fist握拳 and pointed at a picture of the mountain. He said in a loud voice, "Mount Everest, you beat me the first time, but I'll beat you the next time because you've grown all you are going to grow... but I'm still growing!"

The Color of Friendship

Once upon a time the colors of the world started to quarrel. All claimed that they were the best. The most most forite.

Green said: "Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees and lees. Without me, all animals would die. Look over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority."

Blue interrupted: "You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and drawn up by the clouds from the deep sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace, you would all be nothing."

Yellow chuckled: "You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety, and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower, the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun."

Orange started next to blow her trumpet: "I am the color of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the needs of human life. I carry the most important vitamins. Think of carrots, pumpkins, oranges, mangoes, and papayas. I don't hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you."

Red could stand it no longer he shouted out: "I am the ruler of all of you. I am blood - life's blood! I am the color of danger and of brery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire into the blood. Without me, the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the color of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy."

Purple rose up to his full height: He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: "I am the color of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs, and bishops he always chosen me for I am the sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me! They listen and obey."

Finally Indigo spoke, much more quietly than all the others, but with just as much determination: "Think of me. I am the color of silence. You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep water. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace."

And so the colors went on boasting, each convinced of his or her own superiority. Their quarreling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of bright lightening thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colors crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for

In the midst of the clamor, rain began to speak: "You foolish colors, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Don't you know that you were each made for a special purpose, unique and different? Join hands with one another and come to me."

Doing as they were told, the colors united and joined hands. The rain continued: "From now on, when it rains, each of you will stretch across the sky in a great bow of color as a reminder that you can all live in peace. The Rainbow is a sign of hope for tomorrow." And so, whenever a good rain washes the world, and a Rainbow ears in the sky, let us remember to reciate one

That's what friends do 朋友就该这么做

Jack tossed the papers on my desk―his eyebrows knit into a straight line as he glared at

"What’s wrong?" I “怎么了?”

He jabbed a finger at the proposal. "Next time you want to change anything, ask me first," he said, turning on his heels and leing me stewing in

How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something I thought I was paid to 他怎么能这样对我!

It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. "He’s personally responsible for two different secretaries leing the firm," she

As the weeks went by, I grew to despise Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. Jack quickly sled a verbal insult on any cheek turned his way. I prayed about the situation, but to be honest, I wanted to put Jack in his place, not love

One day another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed, but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up.

Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved

I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”

Jack snickered nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I

“I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does.” I slipped out of the chair and closed the door behind “我保证,可以成为你的朋友。

Jack oided me the rest of the week. Proposals, specs, and letters eared on my desk while I was at lunch, and my corrected versions were not seen again. I brought cookies to the office one day and left a batch on his desk. Another day I left a note. “Hope your day is going great,” it

Over the next few weeks, Jack reeared. He was reserved, but there were no other episodes. Coworkers cornered me in the break room. “Guess you got to Jack,” they said. “You must he told him off good.”

I shook my head. “Jack and I are becoming friends,” I said in faith. I refused to talk about him. Every time I saw Jack in the hall, I smiled at him. After all, that’s what friends

One year after our "talk," I discovered I had breast cancer. I was thirty-two, the mother of three beautiful young children, and scared. The cancer had metastasized to my lymph nodes and the statistics were not great for long-term survival. After my surgery, friends and loved ones visited and tried to find the right words. No one knew what to say, and many said the wrong things. Others wept, and I tried to encourage them. I clung to hope
