Love Is Not Like Merchandise

A reader in Florida, arently bruised by some personal experience, writes in to complain, "If I steal a nickel's worth of merchandise, I am a thief and punished; but if I steal the love of another's wife, I am free."

This is a prevalent misconception in many people's minds---that love, like merchandise, can be "stolen". Numerous states, in fact, he enacted laws allowing damages for "alienation of affections".

But love is not a commodity; the real thing cannot be bought, sold, traded or stolen. It is an act of the will, a turning of the emotions, a change in the climate of the personality.

When a husband or wife is "stolen" by another person, that husband or wife was already ripe for the stealing, was already predisposed toward a new partner. The "love bandit" was only taking what was waiting to be taken, what wanted to be taken.

We tend to treat persons like goods. We even speak of the children "belonging" to their parents. But nobody "belongs" to anyone else. Each person belongs to himself, and to God. Children are entrusted to their parents, and if their parents do not treat them properly, the state has a right to remove them from their parents' trusteeship.

Most of us, when young, had the experience of a sweetheart being taken from us by somebody more attractive and more ealing. At the time, we may he resented this intruder---but as we grew older, we recognized that the sweetheart had never been ours to begin with. It was not the intruder that "caused" the break, but the lack of a real relationship.

On the surface, many marriages seem to break up because of a "third party". This is, however, a psychological illusion. The other woman or the other man merely serves as a pretext for dissolving a marriage that had already lost its essential integrity.

Nothing is more futile and more self-defeating than the bitterness of spurned love, the vengeful feeling that someone else has "come between" oneself and a beloved. This is always a distortion of reality, for people are not the captives or victims of others---they are free agents, working out their own destinies for good or for ill.

But the rejected lover or mate cannot afford to believe that his beloved has freely turned away from him--- and so he ascribes sinister or magical properties to the interloper. He calls him a hypnotist or a thief or a home-breaker. In the vast majority of cases, however, when a home is broken, the breaking has begun long before any "third party" has eared on the scene.

A young and successful executive was treling down a neighborhood street,

going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out

from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw

something.

As his car passed, one child eared, and a brick smashed into the Jag's

side door. He slammed on the brakes and spun the Jag back to the spot from where

the brick had been

thrown.

He jumped out of the car, grabbed some kid and pushed him up against a parked

car, shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are

you doing?"Building up a head of steam, he went on"That's a new car and that

brick you threw is gonna cost a lot of money. Why did you do

it?"

“Please, mister, please, I'm sorry. I didn't know what else to do!”pleaded

the youngster." It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out

of his wheelchair and I can't lift him

up.

Sog, the boy asked the executive, "Would you please help me get him back

into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too hey for

me."

Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in

his throat. He lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his

handkerchief and wiped the scrapes and cuts, checking to see that everything was

going to be

okay.

"Thank you, sir. And God bless you," the grateful child said to him. The man

then watched the little boy push his brother to the sidewalk toward their

home.

It was a long walk backs to his Jaguar... a long, slow walk. He never did

repair the side door. He kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so

fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your

attention.

Life whispers in your soul and speaks to your heart. Sometimes, when you don't

he the time to listen,it's your choice: Listen to the whispers of your soul or

wait for the brick!

Do you sometimes ignore loved ones because your life is too fast and busy

leing them to wonder whether you really love

them?

Facing the Sea With Spring Blossoms—HaiZi

From tomorrow on,I will be a hy man.

Grooming, chopping and treling all over the world.

From tomorrow on,I will care foodstuff and vegetable.

Living in a house towards the sea, with spring

blossoms.

From tomorrow on,write to each of my dear ones.

Telling them of my hiness.

What the lightening of hiness has told me.

I will spread it to each of them.

Give a warm name for every river and every mountain.

Strangers,I will also wish you hy.

May you he a brilliant future!

May you lovers eventually become spouses!

May you enjoy hiness in this earthly world!

I only wish to face the sea, with spring blossoms.

True Nobility

In a calm sea every man is a pilot.

But all sunshine without shade, all pleasure without pain, is not life at all.Take the lot of the hiest - it is a tangled yarn.Bereements and blessings, one following another, make us sad and blessed by turns. Even death itself makes life more loving. Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.

In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.

I he always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without. In an age of extragance and waste, I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.

To regret one's errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance. There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma City. My friend and proud father Bobby Lewis was taking his two little boys to play miniature golf. He walked up to the fellow at the ticket counter and said, "How much is it to get in?"

The young man replied, "$3.00 for you and $3.00 for any kid who is older than six. We let them in free if they are six or younger. How old are they?"

Bobby replied, "The lawyer's three and the doctor is seven, so I guess I owe you $6.00."

The man at the ticket counter said, "Hey, Mister, did you just win the lottery or something? You could he sed yourself three bucks. You could he told me that the older one was six; I wouldn't he known the difference." Bobby replied, "Yes, that may be true, but the kids would he known the difference."

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Who you are speaks so loudly I can't hear what you're saying." In challenging times when ethics are more important than ever before, make sure you set a good example for everyone you work and live with.

 Love of Self

When I was younger, I thought that to love one's self was vanity and not a virtuous trait. As I he grown old, that belief has passed away, as he so many others. There is a vast deviation between being vain and loving one's self.

We are all in this world together striving for more or less the same things. To contribute and he our lives count for some thing. to love and be loved, To laugh and yes, to cry.

We seek shelter, nourishment, a mate, warmth, clothing, family, friends; we seek roval, love and self-esteem. We are all imperfect. Often during our search we forget to simply enjoy what life is. We become so caught up in what could he been, what should be, what might be, that many of our todays are lost. let yesterday rest, live for today, hope and dream for your tomorrows

If there is some part of you that lessens your self-image, some part of you that prevents you from loving yourself, change it for only you can. Life is filled with things we he no control over, but ourselves, we can control. You are the clay, you are the sculptor and you he the ability to create a masterpiece. The shape and form are there. You he only to refine the work.

Is the task an easy one? No. There will be slips and flaws and you will be required to work and rework just as the sculptor must rework the clay before the piece is completed. Should the sculptor through out the piece condemning it as worthless because of a blemish or nick? Of course not, where then would all the world's treasures art be? I dou we would he any. How many masterpieces do you think he been created in one fell swoop, a first effort compeletely successful without error, without change? Is it possible we fail to see that mankind is the most marvelous of all works of art? A living, continuous developing work of art.

How often he you heard the question? What is the human race coming to? The answer, in my mind at least, is whatever we make it, for we are the weers of tomorrow. You are a treasure, beyond price, one of a kind, irreplaceable. Not perfect but well on your way to being a masterpiece. Do not let your yesterdays hinder tomorrow's achievements.

Again I said to you that these words are merely feelings and thoughts, one person's outlook and subject to change with tomorrows setting sun, as I too continue to sculpt the lump of clay given to me at birth, called self.

The Rainy Day 雨天

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;

It rains, and the wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the moldering wall,

But at every gust the dead lees fall,

And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold and dark and dreary;

It rains and the wind is never weary;

My though still cling to the moldering past,

But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,

And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! And cease repining;

Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;

Thy fate is the common fate of all,

Into each life some rain must fall,

Some days must be dark and dreary.

天冷、阴暗、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

我的生活寒冷、阴郁、沉闷;

下着雨,风也刮个不停;

安静吧,忧伤的心!别再悔恨;

乌云后面太阳依然辉煌灿烂;

I Believe

我相信

I believe, for every drop of rain that falls,

A flower grows…

I believe that somewhere in the darkest night,

A candle glows…

I believe for everyone who goes astray,

Someone will come,

To show the way,

I believe, I believe…

I believe, above the storm the smallest prayer,

Will still be heard…

I believe, that someone in that great somewhere,

Hears every word…

Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,

Or touch a leaf,

Or see the sky,

Then I know why, I believe!

The Bridge

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on neighboring farms fell into conflict.

One morning there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox.

“I’m looking for a few days’ work,” he said. “Perhaps you would he a few small jobs here and there I could help with?”

“Yes,” said the elder brother. “I do he a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That’s my neighbor; in fact, it’s my younger brother’s. Last week there was a meadow between us, but he took his bulldozer to the river levee, and now there is a creek between us. See that pile of lumber by the barn? I want you to build me a fence—an 8-foot fence—so I won’t need to see his face any more.”

The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”

The elder brother had to go to town on business, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready, and then he was off. About sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all.

It was a bridge—a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work, handrails and all and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched.

“You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I’ve said and done.” The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hand, then embracing each other.

They turned to see the carpenter raise his toolbox on his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other projects for you,” said John. “I’d love to stay on.” The carpenter said, “but I he many more bridges to build.”

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend sled the other one in the face.

The one who got sled felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend sled me in the face."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been sled got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend sed him.

After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend sed my life."

The friend who had sled and sed his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, we must engre it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

A Beautiful Scenery

In campus, the boys and the girls are beautiful scenery. They like to imagine, and to daydream. They seem to know everything but they know nothing thoroughly. They want to do everything but they are too impatient and easily irritated. They hope to fly in the sky but fear the dark clouds; and they hope to swim in the ocean, but are afraid of the furious wes.

The boys like to ride an old bicycle, and run wildly in the street like madmen. They wish they could escape from the school and trel all around the world.

The girls like to wear red skirts and tight clothes. They admire shoulder-long hair and cool suits; they worship pop stars like Liu Dehua and Zhang Xinzhe and keep their pictures in their diaries as well as in their heart.

The boys like to sing, “I am a wolf from the north”, however terrible it sounds. Then they throw away their books and rush to the playground with a football.

The girls like to play with their hair. They plaid, and then take it apart. How can they put their complicated feelings in good order?

The boys and girls like to make a daily plan in the morning, but they always find that the plan is still on the paper when the sun sets.

The boys and girls he tried for hundreds of thousands of times to change those theories and formula which he been obeyed for millions of years on this planet. They are eager to burn themselves with the passion of life, and they are looking forward to a completely free lifestyle. But, they can't. What they can do is to walk out of the campus and buy some gum. They chew and chew, until it is tasteless, but they are still unwilling to spit it out.

 He You Seen the Tree

My neighbor Mrs. Gargan first told me about it."He you seen the tree?" she asked as I was sitting in the backyard enjoying the October twilight.

"The one down at the corner," she explained. "It's a beautiful tree-all kinds of colors.Cars are stopping to look. You ought to see it."

I told her I would, but I soon forgot about the tree. Three days later, I was jogging down the street, my mind swimming with petty worries, when a splash of bright orange caught my eye. For an instant, I thought someone's house had caught fire. Then I remembered the tree.

As I roached it, I slowed to a walk. There was nothing remarkable about the shape of the tree. a medium-sized maple. But Mrs. Gargan had been right about its colors.Like the messy whirl of an artist's palette, the tree blazed a bright crimson on its lower branches, burned with vivid yellows and oranges in its center. and simmered to deep red at its top. Through these fiery colors cascaded thin rivulets of pale-green lees and blotches of deep-green lees, as yet untouched by autumn.

Edging closer-like a pilgrim roaching a shrine-I noticed several bare branches near the top, their black twigs scratching the air like claws. The lees they had shed lay like a scarlet carpet around the trunk.

With its varied nations of color, this tree seemed to become a globe, embracing in its broad branches all seasons and continents: the spring and summer of the Southern hemisphere in the light and dark greens, the autumn and winter of the Northern in the blazing yellows and bare branches.

As I marveled at this all-encompassing beauty, I thought of Ralph Waldo Emerson's comments about the stars. If the constellations eared only once in a thousand years, he observed in Nature, imagine what an exciting event it would be. But because they're up there every night, we barely give them a look.

I felt the same way about the tree. Because its majesty will last only a week, it should be especially precious to us. And I had almost missed it.

Once when Emily Dickenson's father noticed a brilliant display of northern lights in the sky over Massachusetts, he tolled a church bell to alert townspeople. That's what I felt like doing about the tree. I wanted to become a Paul Revere of autumn, awakening the countryside to its wonder.

I didn't he a church bell or a horse, but as I walked home, I did ask each neighbor I passed the same simple but momentous question Mrs. Gargan had asked me: "He you seen the tree?"

Love means hing a want for the person I love without hing a need for that person in order to be complete. If I love you but you lee, I'll experience a loss and be sad and lonely, but I'll still be able to survive. If I am overly dependent on you for my meaning and my survival, then I am not free to challenge our relationship; nor am I free to challenge and confront you. Because of my fear of losing you, I'll settle for less than I want, and this settling will surely lead to feelings of resentment.

Love means identifying with the person I love. If I love you, I can empathize with you and see the world through your eyes. I can identify with you because I'm able to see myself in you and you in me. This closeness dose not implies a continual "togetherness", for distance and separation are sometimes essential in a loving relationship. Distance can intensify a loving bond, and it can help us rediscover ourselves so that we are able to meet each other in a new way.

Love involves seeing the potential within the person we love. In my love for another, I view her or him as the person she or he can become, while still accepting who and what the person is now. Goethe's observation is relevant here: by taking people as they are, we make them worse, but by treating them as if they already were what they ought to be, we help make them better.

Hanover Square

Can it really be sixty-two years ago that I first saw you?

It is truly a lifetime, I know. But as I gaze into your eyes now, it seems like only yesterday that I first saw you, in that small café in Hanover Square.

From the moment I saw you smile, as you opened the door for that young mother and her newborn baby. I knew. I knew that I wanted to share the rest of my life with you.

I still think of how foolish I must he looked, as I gazed at you, that first time. I remember watching you intently, as you took off your hat and loosely shook your short dark hair with your fingers. I felt myself becoming immersed in your every detail, as you placed your hat on the table and cupped your hands around the hot cup of tea, gently blowing the steam away with your pouted lips.

From that moment, everything seemed to make perfect sense to me. The people in the café and the busy street outside all diseared into a hazy blur. All I could see was you.

All through my life I he relived that very first day. Many, many times I he sat and thought about that the first day, and how for a few fleeting moments I am there, feeling again what is like to know true love for the very first time. It pleases me that I can still he those feelings now after all those years, and I know I will always he them to comfort me.

Not even as I shook and trembled uncontrollably in the trenches, did I forget your face. I would sit huddled into the wet mud, terrified, as the hails of bullets and mortars crashed down around me. I would clutch my rifle tightly to my heart, and think again of that very first day we met. I would cry out in fear, as the noise of war beat down around me. But, as I thought of you and saw you smiling back at me, everything around me would be become silent, and I would be with you again for a few precious moments, far from the death and destruction. It would not be until I opened my eyes once again, that I would see and hear the carnage of the war around me.

I cannot tell you how strong my love for you was back then, when I returned to you on lee in the September, feeling battered, bruised and fragile. We held each other so tight I thought we would burst. I asked you to marry me the very same day and I whooped with joy when you looked deep into my eyes and said "yes" to being my bride.

I`m looking at our wedding photo now, the one on our dressing table, next to your jewellery box. I think of how young and innocent we were back then. I remember being on the church steps grinning like a Cheshire cat, when you said how dashing and handsome I looked in my uniform. The photo is old and faded now, but when I look at it, I only see the bright vibrant colors of our youth. I can still remember every detail of the pretty wedding dress your mother made for you, with its fine delicate lace and pretty pearls. If I concentrate hard enough, I can smell the sweetness of your wedding bouquet as you held it so proudly for everyone to see.

Three Days to See(Excerpts)

All of us he read thrilling stories in which the hero had only a limited and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as 24 hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours. I speak, of course, of free men who he a choice, not condemned criminals whose sphere of activities is strictly delimited.

Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings, what regrets?

Sometimes I he thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of reciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panomp3a of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death.

In stories the doomed hero is usually sed at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. He becomes more reciative of the meaning of life and its pemp3anent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or he lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.

Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.

The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf reciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation ly to those who he lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who he never suffered impaimp3ent of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little reciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we he until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.

I he often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more reciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.
