Too many people think of hiness as the ultimate goal of life. But, if you?re waiting for hiness to arrive then it?s likely that it never will!

You?re always wanting something more, always looking forward to a time when you?ll be ?hy?. And, if you fall into this trap, you?ll never reach that goal. Hiness should not be your life?s goal, it should be your life! The only time to be hy is right now! It?s state of mind, not a set of accomplishments or the accumulation of material things. You must accept that life will always he challenges and things will not always go your way.

Instead of feeling disointed when things don?t work out the way you?d hoped, feel grateful for the experience. Instead of dreaming of a brighter, hier, richer tomorrow, make today as wonderful as you can.

Hiness is a conscious decision and that I can make it right now. Thinking of the future and hing aspirations is essential to leading a hy and fulfilled life. The trick is not to let thoughts of the future overshadow your enjoyment of the present and the reciation of the things and people you he in your life right now!

There is no way to hiness: hiness is the way!

Stop waiting for hiness to arrive and simply decide to be hy! It?s not some great goal or destination, it?s a journey and a way of life.

A woman baked chapatti for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chapatti on the window sill. Every day, a hunchback came and took away the chapatti. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way: ?The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!?

The woman felt irritated. ?Not a word of gratitude,? she said to herself Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean? One day, she decided to do away with him. She added poison to the chapatti she prepared for him!

As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled. ?What is this I am doing? she said. Immediately, she threw the chapatti into the fire, prepared another one. As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chapatti and muttered the words: ?The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!?

Every day, as the woman placed the chapatti on the window sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune.

That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway. He was hungry and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, ?Mom, it?s a miracle I?m here. While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would he died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. He was kind enough to give me a whole chapatti. He said, ?Your need is greater than mine!?

She remembered the poisoned chapatti that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would he been eaten by her own son!

It was then that she realized the significance of the words: ?The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!? Do good and don?t ever stop doing good, even if it is not reciated at that time.

Mom, I Got My Attitude From You, And That?s Not A Bad Thing!

 Dear Mom,

The big question alled and surprised parents often ask their child after a confrontational or revelatory moment is, "Where did you get this attitude from?" I know you hate to admit it, but I get much of my determined and strong-willed nature from you.

Mom, I know it?s hard dealing with the age angst and the ever-changing moods that come with raising a child. But you should also marvel at the fact that I?ve made it this far, that I?m healthy and hy.

When I was small, I would attend barbecues and family events and wander away from my parents. It wouldn?t be long before someone would stop me to ask whether I was my mother?s daughter.

"Your mom is Melissa," they?d say, a warm smile on their faces. "Is that right?" I would nod, I assume, parents feel when their child talks back or defies them, I was alled at this statement. To me, I acted nothing like you, Mom.

No one says, "I know you?re Melissa?s daughter because of your eyes and nose" it?s the character traits that seal the deal. Dry wit, intelligence, and yes, maybe a little bit of attitude?these are the things I am grateful I he received from you. There?s nothing wrong with hing attitude.

 。

Like for most black individuals, attitude is what defines you and me, and it?s what keeps us from being mentally oppressed and defeated. Attitude is a non-violent form of protection and confrontation -- where would we be in the world without this tool? Surely not where we are.

Mom, when people ask me where I get my attitude from, I tell them: you. And when they ask me where I got my drive, my work ethic, my good hair, and my sense of humor, I say you as well. I will always say this.

When I?m asked why I am the way I am -- why I refuse to allow others to hurt me with their words or actions, why I think and speak about things openly and without fear?I?ll tell them it's because of you.

I?ll complain to you about the arguments between us that lee me wondering about how God made us so much alike that we hardly even noticed.

But I?ll tell them about you.

 Love,

1、Many people believe that they will be hy once they arrive at some specific goal they set for themselves. However, more often than not, once you arrive " there" you will still feel dissatisfied, and move your " there" vision to yet another point in the future. By always chasing after another "there," you are never really reciating what you already he right "here." It is important for human beings to keep soberminded about the age-old drive to look beyond the place where you now stand. On one hand, your life is enhanced by your dreams and aspirations. On the other hand, these drives can pull you farther and farther from your enjoyment of your life right now. By learning the lessons of gratitude and abundance, you can bring yourself closer to fulfilling the challenge of living in the present.

2、Alan and Linda always dreamed of living "the good life." Both from poor working-class families, they married young and set out to fulfill their mutual goal of becoming wealthy. They both worked very hard for years, amassing a small fortune, so they could move from their two-bedroom home to a palatial seven-bedroom home in the most upscale neighborhood. They focused their energies on accumulating all the things they believed signified abundance: membership in the local exclusive country club, luxury cars, designer clothing, and high-class society friends. No matter how much they accumulated, however, it never seemed to be enough. They were unable to erase the deep fear of scarcity both had acquired in childhood. A bizarre but costly lawsuit depleted another huge portion of their sings. One thing led to another, and they found themselves in a financial disaster. Assets needed to be sold, and eventually they lost the country club membership, the cars, and the house. It took several years and much hard work for Alan and Linda to land on their feet, and though they now live a life far from extragant, they he taken stock of their lives and feel quite blessed. Only now, as they assess what they he left -- a solid, loving marriage, their health, a dependable income, and good friends -- do they realize that true abundance comes not from amassing, but rather from reciating.

3、Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never-ending process, from the cradle to the gre. With the world ever changing so fast, the cease from learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What's worse, the animalistic instinct dormant deep in our subconsciousness will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideal, sing our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization, Therefore, to stay mentally young, we he to take learning as a lifelong career.

Father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarrelling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it.

He next unclosed the faggot, and took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into their hands, on which they broke them easily. He then addressed them in these words: "My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks."

A sort of unselfish selfishness

by WARD GREENE

When a man is ten, he has a boy's faith in almost everthing: even Santa Claus is a belief he is not quite ready to give up so long as there is a chance the old gentleman may really live and deliver. When a man is twenty, he is closer to compete disillusion and stronger conviction than he will probably ever be in his life.

This is the age of atheists and agnostics; it is also the age of martyrs. Jesus Christ must he been a very young man when he died on the cross; Joan of Arc, they say, was only nine as the flames consumed her. It is in the later years---oh, anywhere from thirty to fifty---that a man at some time stands with the tatters of his hopes and dreams fallen from him and asks himself:"What, indeed, do i believe?"

He is very apt, then, to cling to the words of other men who he written for him the shadow signposts that come as anything to poiting pathways he found best in the past and roads he will trust on the way ahead. These words may be mere copybook maxims: that honesty is the best policy, or haste makes waste. They may be alone from Shakespeare---

"To thine own self be true"---or from the bible---"All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them"---or from the poets" i myself am Heen and Hell". They may seem a sort of hodgepodge in a man's mind, yet they can make a pattern not inconsistent and not weak.

So if i believe that i myself am Heen and Hell, that anything less than honesty to myself and others is a boomerang on them and me; if my translation of the Golden Rule is simple acts of kindness and understanding and compassion, practiced in the hope that they will be shown to me, then i he a way of life that is a sort of unselfish selfishness. The bald statement may sound cynical, but if i can follow that way, i shall not be too unhy here and i may face death with regret but an untroubled face and a stout heart.

But there are blocks and pitfalls in a way of life, even assuming that a man can adhere to it steadfastly despite his own inclinations to deviate. These obstacles are the work other men who adhere to other ways. Hence kindness and compassion are not enough.

A man, i believe, must he courage and fortitude and a burning sense of justice, too. There are times we should turn the other cheek, but there are likewise times when we must fight the good fight. When? Well, if a fellow can't find the answer on the signposts or in his heart, i guess he has just got to pray.

A Mask was Stifling Me');

Lucy Freeman

露西?

I believe that everyone wants to love and be loved and that hiness stems from a facing and acceptance of self that allows you to give and receive love.

Some think of love as a passionate, hungry, dramatic feeling, all consuming in intensity and desire. As I see it, this is, rather, immature love: it is a demand on others, not a giving of oneself. Mature love, the love that brings hiness, flows out of an inner fullness, and accepts, understands and is tender toward the other person. It does not ask to be served but only where it may serve.

Six years ago I could hardly breathe because of acute sinus. My stomach was always upset and full of queasiness and I had trouble sleeping, even though I felt exhausted all the time. In desperation, after doctors who treated the physical symptoms failed to ease the pain, I tried psychoanalysis. I was lucky to find a wise, compassionate man who showed me what it meant to be able to trust myself and others.

The physical ills are gone, but more than that, I he at long last started to acquire a philosophy of living. I had never possessed one. I had lived on dogma and dicta which I had accepted unquestioningly through the years, even though I believed little of it, because I feared to question. But by being unable to live naturally and at peace with myself I was flying in the face of nature. She was punishing me with illness and, at the same time, informing me all was not well just in case I wanted to do something about it.

In order to change, I needed help in facing myself. For me it was not easy to “know thyself”. All my life I had accepted the lesser of the two evils and run away from self because truth was more dangerous. Once I thought that to survive I had to put on a mask and forget what lay underneath. But masks are false protections and the inner part of me refused to go unheard forever.

It caught up eventually, and unless it was to master me I had to face such feelings as fear, anger, envy, hatred, jealousy and excessive need for attention. When I realized I could not he done anything else except what I did, I was able to like myself more and be able to like others not for what they could give me but for what I could give to them.

The Bible shows the way to easy, hy living in many of its pages. It advises, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Those who expect the most are apt to receive the least. I had expected much and was filled with fury because nothing in the outside world relieved my emptiness and despair. Nothing did, either, until I could face the anger and fury, the emptiness and despair, and slowly start to know such new feelings as compassion, conviction, control, calm. I learned, too, of reason—that judicious combination of thought and feeling that enables me to take more responsibility for myself and others, that allows me to slay the ghosts of the past.

For me there is much hard work ahead to achieve greater hiness. Yet, the very struggle I he put into achieving a measure of it makes hiness that much more dear.

The Law of the Heart

by J. George Frederick

At long last I he come to a rather simple point as to what I believe. I believe in what I choose to call “The Law of the Heart”.

In the medical world this phrase, The Law of the Heart, means the great discovery by Professor Ernest Henry Starling of the precise method by which the heart accelerates and retards itself through the heart muscle; also the manner in which it accomplishes the vital twoway exchange of fluids between the bloodstream and the body tissues.

In my view of life there is also supremely needful a vital twoway exchange of heart qualities between human beings. Without it the human spirit and relationship to other spirits is lifeless and dangerous. Dependence on head qualities is mechanical and empty, just as we he discovered that babies do not thrive, even with technically expert nursing care, without mother love.

The Law of the Heart, in my belief, then, means that I can achieve greatest physical and mental health, and he the most constructive relations with life and people, if my matured emotional self dominates my motives and actions. When, after due consultation with my head, the true heart speaks, it is the finest and most mellowed judgment that I, human creature, am capable of. Man is indivisible, I believe; he is a whole; mind, spirit, body—but with only one real, fully representative voice—the voice of the heart.

There is, in my belief, very suggestive symbolism in the means by which the Law of the Heart operates. We know that man needs to give others weaker, less fortunate, a transfusion of his blood as proof of fellowship. We know that hearts and arteries which are hard and unresponsive can bring the retribution of sudden death. We know that hearts which beat in unison with the problems, pains, miseries and needs of others know celestial music which can never be known to those who do not.

We know that hearts capable of quickened pulse at the sight of beauty and nobility, courage and sacrifice, love and tenderness, a child or a sunset, achieve intensities of living—a song in their hearts—unknown to others. We know that those who choke off the heart’s native impulses will likely bring on a coronary thrombosis of obstructed emotion which can cripple.

The first Law of the Heart, I feel sure, is to pulsate, to love. To fail to pulsate and love is swift and certain spiritual death. There are far, far too many of us who seem obsessed with self, unable or unwilling to love. The second Law of the Heart, I believe, is to give, and forgive, to sacrifice. The heart is the great supplier and giver to every remote atom in the body. The heart muscle is the strongest in the whole body.

These things I know and believe, and they provide me with the foundation of what I call my humanistic philosophy of life. It works for me. I feel close to the earth with it. Yet face uplifted. The heart is closer to everlasting reality, although I am fully aware that I must not let raw emotion masquerade as a heart quality, and that the immature heart can make serious errors. The educated, matured heart is, to my belief, not only the noblest thing in man but also the great hope of the world.

Keep calm at least

When you had fallen to the bottom of your life, every people around you would tell you: Be hard-bitten and be hy!To be hard-bitten would be necessary, but be hy? Even in that serious occation? That would be hard for you, after all, who could keep hy while he were head-broken and bleeding. But you should at least keep calm, calmly facing and calmly treating. But you should at least keep calm, calmly facing and calmly treating. If you he oained the calmness, without hy and without unhy, you then he possessed the power for rebirth.

Acres of Diamonds

There was a farmer in Africa who was hy and content. He was hy because he was content. He was content because he was hy.

One day a wise man came to him and told him about the glory of diamonds and the power that goes along them.

The wise man says, “If you had a diamond the size of your thumb, you could he your own city. If you had a diamond the size of your fist you could probably own your own country.” And then he went away.

That night the farmer couldn't sleep. He was unhy and he was discontent. He was unhy because he was discontent, and he was discontent because he was unhy.

The next morning he made arrangements to sell off his farm, took care of his family and went in search of diamonds. He looked all over Africa and couldn't find any. He looked all through Europe and couldn’t find any. When he got to Spain, he was emotionally, physically and financially broke. He got so disheartened that he threw himself into the Barcelona River and committed .

Back home, the person who had bought his farm was watering the camels at a stream that ran through the farm. Across the stream, the rays of the morning sun hit a stone and made it sparkle like a rainbow.

He thought it would look good on the mantelpiece. He picked up the stone and put it in the living room. That afternoon the wise man came and saw the stone sparkling. He asked, "Is Hafiz back?"

The new owner said, "No, why do you ask?" The wise man said, "Because that is a diamond. I recognize one when I see one." The man said, "No, that's just a stone I picked up from the stream. Come, I'll show you. There are many more.' They went and picked some samples and sent them for analysis. Sure enough, the stones were diamonds. They found that the farm was indeed covered with acres and acres of diamonds.

One of the astronauts said they were practicing for a trip to the moon. When his son relayed(中继,转发) this comment, the Najo elder got all excited and asked if it would be possible to give the astronauts a message to deliver to the moon.

One of my patients, a successful busines *** an, tells me that before his cancer he would bee depressed unless things went a certain way. Hiness was "hing the cookie." If you had the cookie, things were good.

If you didn't he the cookie, life wasn't worth a damn. Unfortunately, the cookie kept changing.

Some of the time it was money, sometimes power, sometimes . At other times, it was the new car, the biggest contract, the most prestigious address.

A year and a half after his diagnosis of prostate cancer he sits shaking his head ruefully. "It's like I stopped learning how to live after I was a kid.

When I give my son a cookie, he is hy. If I take the cookie away or it breaks, he is unhy.

But he is two and a half and I am forty-three. It's taken me this long to understand that the cookie will never make me hy for long.

The minute you he the cookie it starts to crumble or you start to worry about it crumbling or about someone trying to take it away from you.

You know, you he to give up a lot of things to take care of the cookie, to keep it from crumbling and be sure that no one takes it away from you.

You may not even get a chance to eat it because you are so busy just trying not to lose it.

Hing the cookie is not what life is about." My patient laughs and says cancer has changed him.

For the first time he is hy. No matter if his business is doing well or not, no matter if he wins or loses at golf. "

Two years ago, cancer asked me, 'Okay, what's important? What is really important?' Well, life is important.

Life. Life any way you can he it, life with the cookie, life without the cookie. Hiness does not he anything to do with the cookie; it has to do with being alive. Before, who made the time?" He pauses thoughtfully. "Damn, I guess life is the cookie."

How wonderful are islands! Islands in space, like this one I he e to, ringed about by milesof water, linked by on bridges, no cables, no telephones.

An lsland from the world and the world's life. Islands is time, like this short vacation of mine.

The past and the future are cut off: only the present remains.

One lives like a child or a saint in the immediacy of here and now.

Every day, every act, is an island, washed by time and space, and has an island's pletion.

People, too, bee like islands in such an atmosphere, self-contained, whole and serene;respecting other people's solitude, not intruding on their shores, standing back in reverncebefore the miracle of another individual.

"No man is an island," said John Donne. I feel we are all islands--in a mon sea.

We are all, in the last *** ysis, alone.

And this basic state of solitude is not something we he any choice about.

It is , as the poet Rilke says, "not something that one can take or lee".

We are solitary. We may delude ourselves and act as though this were not so, yes, even tobegin by assuming it."Naturally," he goes on to say,"we will turn giddy."

We seem so frightened today of being alone that we never let it hen. Even if family, friends, and movies should fail, there is still the radio or television to fill up the void.

Women, who used to plain of loneliness, need never be alone any more.

We can do our housework with soap-opera heroes at our side. Even day-dreaming was morecreative than this; it demanded something of oneself and it fed the inner life.

Now instead of planting our solitude with our dream bolssoms, we choke the space withcontinuous music, chatter and panionship to which we do not even listen.

It is simply there to fill the vacuum. When the noise stops there is no inner music to take itsplace. We must relearn to be alone.

Years of storms had taken their toll on the old windmill. Its wheel, rusted and fallen, lay silent in the lush bluegrass. Its once animated silhouette was now a tall motionless steeple in the twilight sun.

I hadn‘t walked across our old farm in fif years. Yet the sensations came flooding back. I could *** ell the freshness of new mown alfalfa. I could feel the ping of the ice cold summer rain, and the sun‘s sudden warmth on my wet shoulders when it reeared after a brisk July thunderstorm.

Rain or shine, I used to walk this path each day to see Greta. She always made me *** ile, even after Sis and I had just had a big squabble. I would help Greta with her chores. Then we would visit over a generous helping of her delicious homemade chocolate cookies and ice cream. Being confined to a wheel chair didn‘t stop Greta from being a fabulous cook.

Greta ge me two of the greatest gifts I‘ve ever received. First, she taught me how to read. She also taught me that when I forge Sis for our squabbles, it meant I wouldn‘t keep feeling like a victim. Instead, I would feel sunny.

Mr. Dinking, the local banker, tried to foreclose on Greta‘s house and land after her hu *** and passed away. Thanks to Pa and Uncle Johan, Greta got to keep everything. Pa said that it was the least he could do for someone talented enough to teach me to read!

Soon folks were ing from miles around to buy Greta‘s homemade cakes, pies, breads, cookies, cider, and ice cream. Hank, the grocery store man, came each week to stock his shelves and bring Greta supplies.

Greta even had me take a big le pie to Mr. Dinking who became one of her best customers and friends. That‘s just how Greta was. She could turn anyone into a friend!

Greta always said, "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!" No matter how terrible my day started, I always felt sunny walking home from Greta‘s house-even beneath the winter starlight.

I arrived at Greta‘s house today just after sunset. An ambulance had stopped a few feet from her door, it‘s red lights flashing. When I ran into the old house, Greta recognized me right away.

She *** iled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. She was almost out of breath when she reached out and softly touched my arm. Her last words to me were "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!"

I‘m sure that Greta is walking in the brightest sunshine she‘s ever seen. And, I‘m sure that she heard every word I read at her memorial service.

I chose a beautiful verse by Leo Buscaglia. It‘s one that Greta taught me to read many years ago…

"Love can never grow old. Locks may lose their brown and gold. Cheeks may fade and hollow grow. But the hearts that love will know, never winter‘s frost and chill, summer‘s warmth is in them still."
